01 THE FIBRE

Cashmere begins with selection.

Fibre content alone does not determine quality. Selection, preparation and control shape the yarn that follows.

Every Todd & Duncan yarn is produced at its
mill beside Loch Leven in Scotland.

LABORATORY ASSESSMENT

'Only the finest fibre'

Todd & Duncan uses this phrase for the
white, downy undercoat it selects. Raw fibre
is checked for micron, length, whiteness and
impurities before it becomes yarn.

TRACEABLE FROM FIBRE LOT TO CONE

Each batch remains identifiable through production. For VOLENTIERI, this matters because a refined surface can only begin with a controlled, consistent yarn.

02 THE YARN

Colour and volume are built into the yarn.

Todd & Duncan fibre-dyes, blends, cards and mule-spins the selected cashmere at Loch Leven.

01

WINDING AND TWISTING

FIBRE-DYED

Colour is introduced before spinning, allowing
the shade to be built through the fibre rather
than added to an already formed yarn.

02

BLENDING AND CARDING

BLENDED & CARDED

Blending develops the intended shade; controlled
carding prepares the fibres while protecting their
integrity.

MODERN MULE SPINNING

MULE-SPUN

Slow, long draws produce what Todd & Duncan
describes as a level, rounded and voluminous yarn.

COLOUR KNOWLEDGE, HELD OVER TIME

Todd & Duncan's colour archive dates to 1965. Its current 2/28Nm 100% cashmere shade card offers 180 stock-supported colours —
a broad palette grounded in decades of colour work.

03 THE CONSTRUCTION

VOLENTIERI chooses a knitted construction to express cashmere through loft, dimension, movement and an enveloping hand.

Knitting gives the throw its distinctive luxury.

WOVEN

Warp and weft interlace in a stable grid, creating a composed surface with precision and structure.

VOLENTIERI KNIT

Intermeshing loops give the yarn room to rise from the surface. The result is
loft, supple movement and a fuller expression of the cashmere itself.

For VOLENTIERI, knitting is not simply a construction method. It is what allows the selected cashmere to be
experienced as volume, softness and movement — giving the throw its unusually rich hand and presence.

05 BESPOKE BY DESIGN

A throw composed for a particular room.

ONE LARGE TEXTILE

At approximately 140 x 200 cm, the throw is knitted as one generous textile rather than cut from woven yardage.
Achieving aneven expression across that scale depends on careful sampling, precise set-up, experienced hands and review of the completed surface.

04 THE WASHING

A separate stage, judged
in balance.

After knitting, the completed throw passes to a separate specialist
washing partner in Umbria. The wash is treated as a distinct, carefully
judged stage because it helps determine how the finished textile will
feel, fall and settle.

Knitting establishes the structure; washing helps the completed textile
develop its final hand and surface. The treatment must be judged in relation
to the yarn, the knitted loops and the generous dimensions of the piece,
because it can influence softness, stitch definition, drape and dimensional
balance.

WHY WASH THE COMPLETED KNIT?

THE POINT OF BALANCE

Enough washing to develop a softer, fuller
hand and a composed surface — while
preserving stitch clarity, natural movement
and the intended dimensions.

BEFORE BALANCE

The fibre may feel closed and the surface not yet
fully developed.

BEYOND BALANCE

Excess treatment can blur stitch definition, alter
drape or disturb dimensions.

Bespoke is not an accessory to the product. It is how each VOLENTIERI throw begins.

06 THE BUSINESS BEHIND VOLENTIERI

A reputation built through long relationships.

Her experience with material, makers and clients is one of the brand's defining assets.

A LIFE IN MATERIAL

Yuko entered the family business in 1990, a practice begun by her mother, Fumiko, in
1973. She later trained in artisanal knitwear at an atelier in Rome and deepened her
experience of fine cashmere in Assisi. For more than three decades, she has worked with
Italian makers, made-to-order fashion for women and men, and long-standing clients in
Japan.

A GLOBAL FRAME OF REFERENCE

Across decades of international travel, Yuko has encountered exceptional craft, fashion,
interiors and ways of living. Relationships with discerning clients and people of cultivated taste
around the world have further refined her eye — shaping an international sensibility for colour,
material and proportion that informs VOLENTIERI.

YUKO KOMAI · FOUNDER

VOLENTIERI reflects an accumulated judgement about material, colour, proportion, maker and client —

what to select, what to decline and when a textile feels complete.

The throw is new to many overseas clients. The judgement and client practice behind it are not.

HIGH REPEAT

Among established high-end clients in Japan, repeat ordering is exceptionally strong. Many clients return for another

UNDERSTOOD BY TOUCH

The explanation matters, but the decisive impression is often immediate: substance in the hand, softness on the
